Lauren Poindexter, M.D. is a primary care sports medicine physician at UAMS Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Fayetteville and Lowell and Arkansas Children’s Northwest in Springdale. She is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). Dr. Poindexter received her undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California (USC) in 2003 and earned a Master of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 2005, where she was the Founder/President of the U of A Razorback Athletic Trainers’ Association. Following, she completed a Post-Baccalaureate Program for Pre-Medical Sciences at the Harvard Extension School (HES) in Cambridge, MA.
Background
Dr. Poindexter received her medical degree from Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) in Roanoke, Virginia, where she also earned a graduate certificate in translational research. During medical school, she founded and became president of both the VTCSOM Chapter of the Assocociation of Women Surgeons and the VTCSOM Student Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Assocociation. She completed her internship in general surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center (SJHMC) in Phoenix, Arizona, earning the Dignity Diamond patient advocacy award in 2016. Dr. Poindexter then completed her Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) followed by a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Sports Medicine fellowship at New York University.
Dr. Poindexter has served as a team physician for St. Joseph’s College, sideline physician for Parkview football, race course physician for the Little Rock Marathon, and preparticipation physical exam physician for the Little Rock School District. She has extensive experience in athletic training and sports safety education. She has served as a lecturer for NYU Rusk Rehabilitation and a musculoskeletal exam preceptor for both the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and UAMS. She has also participated in the quality improvement in advanced learners program at UAMS. She is a member of The New Metro: Sports Medicine Board Review Course planning committee and has served on the opioid stewardship and pharmacy and therapeutic committees at UAMS.

Dr. Poindexter is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), Arkansas Medical Society (AMS), Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP) and the
American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (AAPMR). She is also a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
